381. [Slave Ship Documents -- Bennet Munro, 1775-1809] Gorham, James, and Amos Green. Schooner Concord to Bennet Munro. Undated, but presumably August, 1805. Approx. 25cm. x 18cm. Later folds. [and] Capt. Bennet Munro in Acct. with James Gorham and A. Green. September 27, 1805 in Havana. Sheet folded to form (4) pages, the center two of which contain the accounting. 25cm. Several later folds (moderate tearing and perforations along folds). Signed by James Gorham & Amos Green (in a single hand, probably by one of them -- or on their behalf by an agent). The first document contains a list of amounts paid to workers and for various supplies (mainly potatoes and onions) August 10-13, 1805. The "Concord" was a sometime slave ship, based in Bristol, Rhode Island. Munro (1775-1809), also of Bristol, served as Captain on at least one slaving voyage to Africa and probably others, such as this one, that involved the transportation and sale of slaves. The Concord was not being prepared for an African slaving voyage at this time, although the Concord did make such a voyage in September of 1806 bringing 90 slaves from Africa (80 of whom reached Charleston) in July of 1807. The second document is a brief account of charges for the maintenance of slaves ($27) and of the proceeds ($590) from the sale of 2 slaves as well as proceeds of one slave from the acct of Thomas Swan ($125). Gorham and Green were probably local agents or slave dealers. These two documents suggest that Munro sailed the Concord to a southern port (probably Charleston), where he sold his cargo (perhaps the onions and potatoes) and acquired slaves which he then took to sell in Havana. 2000.00
382. Goss, Warren Lee. The Soldier's Story of His Captivity at Andersonville, Belle Isle, and Other Rebel Prisons. Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1868. frontis, ills, 272p. plus (6)p. publisher's adverts. Modern quarterbinding. 21cm. Contents only fair, with chipping and staining. Two-page manuscript by Chauncey W. Hinman, a lawyer from Schoharie, New York, tipped-in on endpaper. The binder has inserted the manuscript very close to the inner margin, requiring real care in lifting the first leaf to read the second. Hinman was a member of the 134th Regiment New York State Volunteers. He was taken prisoner by Confederate forces under General Hood in the fall of 1864 and eventually imprisoned at Andersonville during the last 6 months of the war. This must have been Hinman's copy and he was moved to insert this manuscript remembrance of his imprisonment at Andersonville. He says [in part]: " My experience and knowledge gained while an inmate of these various prisons particularly while at Andersonville enables me to say that the statements in this volume bear the impress of credibility and are not overdrawn. I was a member of a construction crew and not belonging to a Regiment at the time of my capture or imprisonment. Our business was getting out bridge timber R.R. ties and keeping material on hand to replace whatever the Rebs or high water destroyed. Our company consisted of about 100 men under command of a supervisor whose name was Speer or Spier.
"Prison fare at Andersonville was once a day less than 1/2 pint unsifted corn meal, same quantity beans (wormy & light), about 2 ounces Beef cured but not cooked or in lieu thereof (...??) 2 table spoons molasses, with a little salt, not enough to season our mess. These rations were never changed or enlarged upon or given us but once a day. The same wagon that brought in the rations took the dead out." 750.00
