Item #78421 Greece and the Greeks. Peloponnesus: Notes of Study and Travel. William George Clark.

Greece and the Greeks. Peloponnesus: Notes of Study and Travel

London: John W. Parker and Son, n.d. [1858?]. Hardcover. frontis, 5 maps (1 folding), xiv, 344p. Contemporary blind-stamped orange cloth. 22cm. Covers sound but rather worn (with some splitting, fraying, etc.) along joints and extremities, and with some soiling, minor spotting and uneven fading. Scattered foxing (heaviest on folding map and title-page). This is almost identical to Clark's 1858 work titled "Peloponnesus: Notes of Study and Travel"). We don't know why the work is differently titled. Here are the other differences we noted: (1) there is no date on the title-page in this copy; (2) the frontis ("St. Paul's Bay, Malta, from the South" from a drawing by James Smith) does not appear in the copy dated 1858--Clark mentions only briefly stopping at Malta; (3) the five maps are bound in separately at various places (facing pages 1, 114, 125, 158, and 215) in the text instead of at the end; (4) there are no publisher's advertisements at the end of this copy; and (5) this copy is slightly taller (21.5cm. versus 21.2 cm.). Good. Item #78421
