Item #82508 Photograph of Florida Log Cabin with three African American Children. Katherine Elizabeth McClellan.

Photograph of Florida Log Cabin with three African American Children

1912. Image size 36 x 28 cm. Matted and mounted on stiff card (57 x 46 cm.). "Katherine E. McClellan" signature (or stamp) along bottom at lower left. Light staining around edges of matting. Vertical wood burn down the center which is quite visible on the back of the matting and only modestly visible on the photo. Photo of a modest log cabin somewhere in the South. Two bonneted and barefoot young African American girls stand in front of a small boxed area (a well?) a short distance from the cabin. A third child can be faintly seen looking out of the only window present on the two sides of the cabin which are visible. This is a high quality softly focused professional photograph. McClellan was the official Smith College photographer from 1912-1918 and had been actively involved in photographing Smith and Northampton from about 1903. Prior to coming to Northampton she photographed actively in the Adirondacks and even produced at least a couple of hard to find printed photographic items ("John Brown, or a Hero's Grave in the Adirondacks" and "Keene Valley"). She retired to Florida where she continued as a photographer. A 1987 Smith College exhibit of some of her photographs included some photos of African Americans in Florida which were taken in 1912. Perhaps this is one of the images from that trip although we don't know when or where McClellan took this photograph. Very Good. Item #82508
