Substantial cover spotting, wrinkling & wear. Gift inscription (pencil). Old bookplate of the Curry School. Pioneering effort to produce a military history of African Americans. Largely focused on African American participation in the Civil War, but begins with a chapter each on the American Revolution, Denmark Vesey, and Nat Turner. Brown, an important anti-slavery activist, was himself the son of a slave and a Kentucky slave owner. First published in 1867. The frontis was added to this edition which was published by Brown or his family making it one of a relatively small number of 19h century books issued with the imprint of an African American publisher.
