Typed Letter, Signed. Dated Aug. 7, 1906. Addressed to Chas. H. Scott in New York City

1906. Paperback. One page. Letterhead of Internal Revenue Service, District of Alabama, Collector's Office. Signed "Jos. O. Thompson." Thompson and Scott were powerful in the Republican Party in Alabama. According to the Booker T. Washington Papers, BTW was responsible for securing appointment of Thompson, who had apparently been Postmaster in Tuskegee, to his position in the I.R.S. and his position as arbiter of Republican political appointments in Alabama. This letter advises Scott that someone named "Manning" had written to various Republicans in Alabama asking for contributions for a newspaper (unnamed), and was writing to them at the suggestion of Scott. Thompson advises that he has told Manning he would have nothing to do with the paper and suggests to Scott that he caution Manning about using Scott's name in connection with such solicitations. Very Good. Item #68833
