Irby and Mangles were two British naval officers who embarked from England for a tour of the continent in 1816. They expanded their trip to include Egypt and traveled up the Nile. They met with Bankes and Legh in Aleppo, with whom they became the earliest of modern explorers of Syria. They traveled through the Holy Land and became ill with dysentery.
