It includes poetry from students at eight HBCUs (Atlanta, Fisk, Hampton, LeMoyne, Straight, Talladega, Tillotson, and Tougaloo). The two students with the most poems are *J. Henderson Brooks and *Hugh M. Gloster. The first volume with this title was edited by Lillian Welch Voorhees and Robert Welch O'Brien, published in 1932, and included poems by students from only two HBCU's (Talladega and Tougaloo).
