German text. INSCRIBED on endpaper in Langston's characteristic in green ink ("For Amy Spingarn, Simple a longs way from home, Sincerely -- Langston Harlem, New York, Oct. 18, 1960"). "Simple Speaks His Mind" translated into German by Gunther Klotz. Amy Spingarn was the white financial benefactor who had enabled Hughes to attend Lincoln University in the 1920s. She and Hughes remained friends until his death in 1967. Amy's husband, Joel Elias Spingarn, was active in the NAACP, serving as its second President, 1930-1939, Very Good / Poor. Item #75937
