Reprint of the 1878 New York edition. Cesnola fought on the Union side in the American Civil War, achieving the rank of Colonel, and was appointed U.S. Consul to Cyprus a few months after his honorable discharge in the Fall of 1864. While in Cyprus he amassed a large collection of antiquities, many of which were purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Stuart Swiny, in his Foreword to this 1991 edition, describes this book as "a tantalizing web of fact, fiction and hyperbole that researchers have labored to disentangle for well over a century."
