Missionaries and Others in India circa 1906
n.p. n.d. [ca. 1906]. Hardcover. About 80 photos mounted (pasted down) on both sides of 14 album leaves. Size and quality of photos varies greatly - several are clear and sharp but other are neither clear nor sharp. Fading is also an issue on some photos. Seven photos are about 21 x 15cm. and are mounted one to a page. The other photos are considerably smaller (the smallest are about 8 x 6cm.) and are mounted 3-5 to a page (except for one page with 7 photos). No captions. Also includes several blank pages between most of the photos and a final page with 3 additional photos. Oblong album lacking front cover and backstrip. 31 x 24cm. First few album leaves detached. A photo has been cut out of one leaf with some damage to adjoining photos on both sides. The former owner told us that this was a missionary album from the East Khasi Hill District. It is true that a couple of the larger photos (of groups of people) look like missionary photos and also true that a printed photo (titled "The Assembly at Shillong") cut from a magazine is mounted in this album. We noted photos of a couple of buildings in Kolkata (Calcutta). After examination, we think it is more accurate to describe this in general terms as an album with photos of India. Our date comes partly from the look of the photos and from one photo with "Xmas 1906" in the image. Poor. Item #79540
