Jesus Died for Both
Chicago: PP & F Co., c. 1911. Vintage Black & White Print. 41 x 51cm. Recently framed under glass in a flecked silver wooden frame. Light wear to the print, including a small hole near the inner elbow of the girl and some minor chips elsewhere. Some staining on protective brown paper on the back of the framed print. This is a religiously-themed print in which a seated Jesus holds a curly-headed white child on his lap while placing one hand on the head of a kneeling dark skinned girl who is looking up at him with adoration in her eyes. The title is printed in black within a white heart located above the girl's head. The initials PP & F. Co. appear at the left along the bottom edge and we have identified them as the publisher. We found a lengthy 1911 catalog online from a company called Consolidated Portrait & Frame Co. in Chicago which includes this print and eight others under a heading "Religious and Other Pictures for the Colored People." The catalog offered this prints in bulk at $5 per 100 (or 10 prints for $1). We wonder why the artist didn't depict two differently complected children sharing that lap. Very good. Item #82093
