The Free Military School enrolled a total of over 1000 applicants The school was established in December, 1863 and and gave brief training to many white civilians and soldiers who aspired to command African American soldiers during its nine months of existence before its Supervisory Committe disbanded the organization on September 15, 1864. 8000 copies of the first edition of this scarce pamphlet were given away before this second edition was printed in early 1864.
