Slave Songs of the United States

New York: A. Simpson & Co., 1867. 1st ed. Hardcover. xliv, 115p. Original green cloth. 23cm. Relatively light fraying and wear, mostly at corners and at ends of backstrip. Some age-toning. INSCRIBED ("C. F. McKim, W. P. G. Nov. 18/67"). "W.P.G." must be William Phillips Garrison who was involved in the publication of this book and was married Lucy McKim (one of its co-editors). "C. F. McKim" is surely Charles Follen McKim, Lucy's brother and eventually senior partner of McKim, Mead & White, an important architectural firm. We recently reacquired this copy from a longtime customer who pointed out the significance of the inscription and enjoying telling Phil that he had failed to even mention this inscription when we sold copy to him a few decades ago. Near Fine. Item #85272
