London: Printed for J. Osborn, 1740. Hardcover. 3 vols. frontises in Vols I and II (folding in the latter), [2], xxiii, [11, 480, xxi, [1], 406, [2], 451p. Gilt-ruled old leather, rebacked (probably in the 19th century). 17cm. Bindings rather worn on all volumes. Vol. I lacks the backstrip; Vol. II has a backstrip which is detached along one side. Armorial bookplate in each volume. Contents generally sound with light to moderate browning, a touch of foxing, and some soil and other wear. We don't know whether Vol. III originally had a frontis. These volumes appear to be quite scarce, both in commerce and in institutional holdings. The title on each volume includes a list of some of the criminals whose details are given in that volume -- 24 are listed in Vol. I, 19 in Vol. II and 18 in Vol. II. According the Preface in the first volume, all of the criminals described in that volumes had been executed within "about a dozen years past." Among those included were Deval Abraham, a lottery ticket forger, Julian, a "Black-Boy" and an Incindiary, John Shepherd, a Foot-Pad, House-Breaker, and Prison-Breaker, Jonathan Wild, a Thief-taker, Jane Holmes, a Shop-lifter, Catherine Hayes, a bloody and inhuman Murderess [who was burned at the stake], Alice Green, a Cheat, a private Thief and Housebreaker, John Upton, a Pirate, and John Gow, a most notorious Pyrate and Murderer. Vols. I and II contain a Preface in two parts which celebrates the intricacies, wisdom and fairness of the British system of justice. Fair. Item #86506
