I and II reproduce, mostly in monochrome although 48 pages are reproduced and mounted in striking color, the 339 leaves of the manuscript (1-182 in Vol. I and 183-339 in Vol. II). Vol. III is a slender Introductory volume containing an Introduction by E. H. Alton, an Essay on the ornament of the manuscript by Peter Meyer, and a Collation of the text with the Vulgate (Wordsworth and White's text of 1889) by G. O. Simms. Vols. I and II are bound in full vellum with the front covers and backstrips decorated in gilt and black by Otto Walter Ltd, Vol. III is bound in vellum-backed light blue boards with the backstrip decorated in gilt and black to match the first two volumes. 41cm. Vols. I and II are still in their original protective flapped cardboard boxes; Vol. III is in its original thin card slipcase. All three volumes still have plain ivory-colored paper jackets. The two card boxes have some browning and a bit of wear, and the former owner has written "Kells" in red ink on one end of the slipcase and both boxes. Vols. I and II are identified as "Exemplar ex Subscriptione Comparatum No. 191." Vol. III is unnumbered but has a stated limitation of 500. The original Book of Kells is on permanent display at Trinity College in Dublin where this 9th century work is proudly described as "Ireland's greatest cultural treasure and the world's most famous medieval manuscript."
