An Inquiry into the Condition and Prospects of the African Race in the United States and the Means of Bettering Its Fortunes. By an American

Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington, and Haswell, 1839. 1st ed. Hardcover. 214p. Original cloth. 19 cm. Modest corner crease on front cover. Significant foxing throughout, and quite heavy on many leaves including the title-leaf. A former owner's pencil signature ("R. J. Haldeman") in pencil on front free endpaper and the half-title. Evidence of ther eraased pencil notes on endpaper. The anonymous author identifies his location as District of Columbia on the last page but never identifies himself by name. He favors colonization of African Americans in Africa because "... a candid view of both sides of the question, and a deliberate survey of the whole controversy, has resulted in an entire conviction that this plan offers the only feasible, benevolent, effectual remedy for American slavery." [page 207]. Very Good. Item #86681
