Saranac Lake, N. Y. Published by the Author and Printed by the Lotus Press in New York, (c. 1898). 1st ed. 20 photos (several full-page), map, unpaginated [26p.]. Thin flexible cloth-covered cover. Oblong (23 x 18cm.). Three leaves have a tear or two in the margins which have been repaired with paper mending tape. Hinges appear to have been neatly reglued. McClellan took up photography as a hobby when her family moved to Saranac Lake in 1892. She soon was photographing actively in the Adirondacks and self-published her only books -- two very scarce, slender printed photographic items ("A Hero's Grave in the Adirondacks" in 1896 and this book two years later). Two other Adirondack-related items were announced but apparently never published. McClellan began spending at least part of the year in Northampton, Mass. in 1903 where she began photographing the local community and especially Smith College. McClellan was designated the official Smith College photographer from 1912 to 1918. She then retired to Florida where she continued to be an active photographer. Item #86956
