Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa; Being a Journal of an Expedition undertaken under the Auspices of H.B.M.'s Government, in the Years 1849-1855, by Henry Barth.

NY: Harper & Brothers, 1857-1859. Hardcover. 3 vols. frontises, modest folding map (with some color), black & white woodcut illustrations, index, 657, 709, 800p. Original blindstamped cloth. 24cm. All three volumes soundly bound although front cover on Vol. II lacks bottom half of joint cloth. Modest insect damage on covers of Vols. II and III. Bottom edge worn on backstrips. Former owner's bookplate on front endpapers, Penciled gift inscriptions (dated 1858) in two of the volumes. Embossed stamp (R. L. Underhill Bath, N.Y. Books, Stationery, Wall Papers & C.) on front endpaper of Vol. III. The Harper set is often identified as the First American edition but it unclear to us whether the first volumes of this set preceded the three volumes of the much scarcer five-volume Appleton edition which had also appeared in 1857. Very Good. Item #87194
