This autobiographical slave narrative states that George was born a slave near the Nottaway River in Essex County, Virginia. He escaped and was recaptured before becoming free during the American Revolution. Rev. George was a British Loyalist during the Revolution. After the British lost the war, George was evacuated by the British to Nova Scotia, where he became a Baptist preacher for five years, before accepting resettlement in Sierra Leone with a number of other free blacks from Nova Scotia. He founded the first Baptist Church in Sierra Leone and died in Freetown in 1810. This volume also contains a report, at pages 332-344, on two Baptist churches consisting chiefly of slaves (one was in Kingston, Jamaica; the other in Savannah, Georgia). Very Good. Item #87473
