The Facts of Reconstruction

New York: Neale, 1913. 1st ed. Hardcover. 3 photos (including frontis), 325p. Original blue cloth. 19cm. Ex lib. (St. Catherine's Hall Library bookplate on front pastedown; white call number on backstrip which has been shellacked and is frayed at ends). No Jacket. INSCRIBED on front free endpaper by Lynch to "Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Binga" and dated Jan 8th 1914. Lynch served as a Republican congressman from Mississippi, 1873-1877 and 1882-1883, and was the first African American to preside at a Republican National Convention. In this book, Lynch presented a different and far more accurate account of Reconstruction than the lying, racist Southern white version featuring noble whites rescuing civilization and white women from northern scalawags and uneducated, sub-human African Americans. Sadly (but predictably), that Southern white version was readily embraced by almost all whites in America and was still the version found in our public school textbooks when we were in school in Iowa in the 1950s. Binga, the inscribee (along with his wife), was a self-made real estate titan who was one of the richest African Americans in early 20th century Chicago before the Great Depression destroyed his bank and his business empire.
