n.d. [ca. 1880?]. Photos. Undated. Address in gilt on back. 10.4 x 6cm. Simple head shot with upper torso indistinct below the neck. Thomas was brother-in-law to more-famed photographer *J. P. Ball. The two along with Ball's brother *Thomas C. Ball were partners in Ball & Thomas, a photographic business in Cincinnati, from 1857 to 1860. J. P. Ball withdrew from the partnership in 1860 after which Alexander Thomas and Thomas C. Ball continued under the same name until about 1874. Thomas (and the Balls) are mentioned in Williams' "History of the Negro Race in America" (published in 1883) where Thomas is said to have recently begun operating on his own at 166 West Fifth Street.
