One of the objects of this organization, in addition to opposing the slave trade, was to support an 1841 British expedition up the Niger. Many of the Europeans on the trip succumbed to disease. James Schon and Samuel Crowther were members of the expedition and wrote an acoount of this expedition: "Journals of the Rev. James Frederick Schon and Mr. Samuel Crowther, Who, with the Sanction of Her Majesty's Government, Accompanied the Expedition up the Niger, in 1841, in Behalf of the Church Missionary Society."
