This copy was apparently interned in the Philippines during World War II along with its owners, Karl and Pauline Rankin. Mr. Rankin, an American diplomat was in Manila when the Japanese took control of the Philippines. Mrs. Rankin recorded on the front free endpaper her presence in the American Diplomatic and Consular Internment Group a 1 Nanshan Road in Manila on August 20, 1942. That free endpaper was also stamped by the "Office of Japanese Military Administration a couple of months earlier. After surviving World War II, Mr. Rankin served in various other diplomatic and consular posts, including U.S Ambassador to Taiwan (1953-1957) and Yugoslavia (1957-1961). Very Good. Item #87922
