Backstrip has been partially reglued and is missing several pieces. Cover darkened, probably from moisture, on top and left portions. Modest reddish bleed-through from cover along top edge of endpapers and diminishing on numerous adjacent pages. A very uncommon book written by a promising young African American man from Burlington who was only about 21 years old when this was published. A two-page autobiographical sketch describes Thornton as having completed the theological course at Drake University in 1892 and that he was an AME preacher. M[ontrose] W. Thornton went on to have a long career in the AME Church, including 5 years (1907-1912) as pastor of Mother Bethel AME Church in Philadelphia.This earnest defense of the worth and ability of African Americans appears to have been his only published book.
