Boston: Hiram Cummings, 1845. (4)p. Newspaper. Published weekly. 49cm. x 66cm. Folded three times. Some wear at edges. Light foxing. Inked signature ("J. G. Birney Esq") in upper left margin. An abolitionist weekly published in Boston. Birney opposed slavery. He tried to publish an abolitionist newspaper in Cincinnati and worked for the American Anti-Slavery Society before resigning from the latter in 1840 because of his opposition to equal rights for women. Birney headed the National Ticket of the Liberty Party in 1840 and 1844. A horseback riding accident in August, 1845 caused Birney to suffer intermittent paralysis and affected his ability to speak, ending his public career although he was said to have remained interested in the abolitionist cause.
