The Devil between the White Man and the Negro

[St. Louis, Mo.]: Freeman-Norwood Publishing Co., 1907. 2nd ed. Hardcover. illustrations, 304p. Original cloth with image on front cover of the devil being chased away by two young men, one white and one black and both wielding clubs. 20 cm. Significant cover discoloration and spotting. Lacks both free endpapers. Contents reasonably sound with some dog-earing at corners and some edge-wear. No jacket (may not have had one). Freeman, surely white, argues that whites are innately superior and will always outshine African Americans. His so-called solution is for African Americans to voluntarily separate themselves into their own cities, towns and communities. The final short chapter extols the example of Mound Bayou, Mississippi. OCLC locates several holdings of this 2nd edition and a few copies with the same pagination but no information about edition. but locates no copies of any earlier or later editions. The title-page identifies Freeman as the author of three additional -- and unlocated by us -- works ("Dealing a Death Blow," "Sailing on the Right Ship" and "Room at the Top"). Fair. Item #88190
