Joe Brown, a recently deceased Des Moines lawyer, is eulogized on pages 72-73, Brown was the first African American graduate of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Iowa. He was a lawyer in Des Moines, co-founded and served as first President (1915-1917) of the Iowa Branch of the NAACP, served as chaplain and director of religious training at Camp Dodge where the U.
