Buuxelles: J.-A. Lelong, 1852, 1846, 1846, 1849 et 1849. Undetermined editions but several are likely to be 1st Belgian editions. Hardcover. 150, 88, 85, 4, 107, 147p. Original wrappers not preserved. Old pebbled cloth. 13cm. French text. This volume appears to have been part of someone's large collection of plays since the gilt title on the backstrip is simple D. V. 40. We acquired this from a French bookseller because of the presence of a work by Victor Sejour, a Louisiana born writer, some of whose poetry appeared, together with that of 16 of his Louisiana compatriots, in the first anthology of African American poetry -- the excessively rare "Les Cenelles: Choix de Poesies Indigenes" (New Orleans: 1845). Sejour, supported by his parents, had moved to Paris when only 19. In 1837, which appears to have been only a year after his arrival in France, he wrote "Le Mulatre" ["The Mulatto"] which is sometimes referred to as the first short story written by an African American. He remained in France for the rest of his life and became a popular and successful playwright (although he outlived his popularity). Because Sejour wrote in French in France, having left our segregated shores, he is often excluded from the canon of African American writers. Only recently have Americans begun to translate some of his plays into English. 19th century editions of his plays are quite scarce. Sejour's Richard III was performed in Paris in 1852 a few months before being performed in Brussels at the Grand Theatre Royal de la Monnaie. It was first published in Paris and there are at least 2 Paris edition. The version in this volume is probably the 1st Belgian edition although, admittedly, we have no bibliographic information as to the Belgian edition (or editions. OCLC lists 2 European holding of this 1852 Belgian edition. We have no bibliographic information about editions or issue points on the Belgian edition (or editions). We also don't know whether there are any textual differences from the French edition. Our only previous copy of Sejour's Richard III, regarded as one of his most popular works, was an 1852 Paris edition identified as Deuxieme edition which contained 108 pages. Very Good. Item #88667
