Welles begins his wanderings by sailing to Australia in 1853 in the Bark Peytona with a stop along the way in Brazil . After some modest and unsuccessful mining-related efforts in Ballerat and hearing rumors of gold in Peru, Welles decides to head to the port of Callao on board the bark Sacusa early in 1854. The rumors prove false and Welles heads to Lima and manages to embark for Isthmus of Panama on the steamer Santiago in hopes of finding passage to California. Welles describes his sojourn in Panama which is not of long duration and then abruptly reports that he reached California on June 15th. After checking out the mining districts and wandering a bit, he decides to open a school in Petaluma, lasting at that venture only about 6 months before leaving in 1854 to return by sea to New England. His account was first published under a different (and longer) title in 1859. Very Good. Item #88820
