Final paragraph on page 557: Extract of a Letter from New York, Aug. 3 -- Five Negroes more and one Spanish Indian have been hang'd, and one pretended Negro doctor was burnt. John U__, a Romish priest has been tried and convicted, for being concerned with the Negroes in this hellish Conspiracy." The "Negro Plot," likely a white racist fantasy, led to the hanging (17), burning (13) or exile (70) of 100 African Americans, John U[ry], a teacher accused of being a Romish priest, was one of four whites to be hanged.
