The Trey of Sevens

Dallas: Matthis & Van Nort Company, (c. 1946). 1st ed. Hardcover. photos (many small and grainy), [8], xvii, 126p. Original tan cloth, lettered in red, as are almost all copies we've seen. 19 cm. Modest soiling and wear including a light dampstain in lower right corner of front cover. No jacket. INSCRIBED on half-title by Hornsby in Waco, Texas on June 22, 1947. A brief personal history of Battery "C" of the 777th Field Artillery Battalion during this small African American unit's World War II service in Europe as Allied Forces pushed through Belgium into Germany and the final unconditional surrender. Hornsby, an African American and a private in the double page photo of what we assume is Company "C" on the two unnumbered leaves following the title-leaf, ends up being a communications operator for Company "C" so may have had been more well informed than most of his companions. Hornsby and many of the other soldiers in this unit appear to have been Texans. Very Good. Item #89353
