Includes two essays: (I) The Question at Issue (pages 5-42); and (II) European Protection of Oriental Christianity (pages 43-93). Southgate traveled extensively in the Middle East before being consecrated in 1844 as a Missionary Bishop for the Ottoman Empire by the Episcopal Church in the United States of America.
