The Feast of Bong, as I Saw It. A Paper Written Several Years Ago by Commander E. Hooker ... and Read before the U. S. Naval Lyceum, New York.

n.p. n.d. Folded four-page leaflet. 22cm. Soiling and several, mostly short, tears. Fragile. Hooker, born in Farmington, Ct. in 1822, entered the merchant service in 1836 and the US Navy in July 1861. He served on Louisiana and Victoria before being transferred to the Potomac Flotilla where he commanded, successively, Currituck, Yankee, and Commodore Read. Hooker was wounded in October 1861 while cutting out a privateer and subsequently served in the Burnside Expedition and its engagements. After the Civil War he served as the naval store keeper at New York and commanded the Idaho which went to Japan in 1868. He retired with the rank of Commander in 1884. According to the first paragraph, this annual festival was celebrated in the "latter part of August" and was similar to the Chinese "Feast of Lanterns." Fair. Item #89979
