Payne's volume, published in 1856, recorded AME Church history to that date. Smith's task, as the fourth official historiographer of the AME Church, was to produce a volume bringing the history forward from 1856 to 1922 although Smith begins this book with a few chapters covering covering and contextualizing some pre-1856 events.
