The Gentleman's Magazine (May 1773)

London: Printed for D. Henry, 1773. Paperback. 2 plates (1 folding), 52p. ([205]-256).Disbound (removed from a bound volume). 22 cm. Library stamp ("Providence Public Library") embossed on right side of one leaf (creating one small hole in that leaf). Of special interest is a short article of four paragraphs on page 226. The first paragraph reports plans to print by subscription a book of poems "by Phillis, a negro servant of Mr. Wheatley of Boston, in New England." This is followed by a three-paragraph letter about Phillis from Mr. Wheatley. Her book ("Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects") was published in London later that year. We were quite unhappy when we bought this issue sight unseen from a seller who neglected to mention the library stamp. Upon further reflection, we realized that almost all copies of this issue would come from ex library sets of this periodical. We decided not to be unhappy about the discreet notice that this periodical had resided in a public library in Rhode Island available for many to read. We were also happy that it was in nice condition, suggesting that it was not often read. Very Good. Item #90105
