INSCRIBED on front endpaper by Chesnutt: "My Dear Mr. Lemperly: I hope you may be satisfied, after reading this book, that I have not only written a novel, but made out a case in the court of morals. Cordially yours, Chas. W. Chesnutt ... Oct. 29, 1900." Chesnutt produced six books between 1899 and 1905. This novel set in the south during reconstruction was the fifth of those books and is regarded by some as his best book. Item #90250
