Item #90529 Proceedings of the General Anti-Slavery Convention, Called by the Committee of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, and Held in London, from Tuesday, June 13th, to Tuesday, June 20th, 1843. John Johnson, short-hand writer, lude.

Proceedings of the General Anti-Slavery Convention, Called by the Committee of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, and Held in London, from Tuesday, June 13th, to Tuesday, June 20th, 1843

London: John Snow, n. d. [1843]. 1st ed. Hardcover. viii, 360p. Original cloth. 22 cm. Minor spine sloping. Modest spot on front cover. Front endpaper is split at hinge, has a stain along the top and the inked name of a former owner (Charles E. Hodge or Hodges and dated 1852). Scattered, mostly light, foxing. The title and Preface leaves have a short tear in right margin. All leaves should be handled carefully to avoid adding more short tears. Despite this litany of condition flaws, this is an appealing copy. The Convention was attended almost exclusively by white British abolitionists and a smattering of white abolitionists from America and elsewhere. As far as we could tell, the only African American in attendance was Rev. James W. C. Pennington who was sent by the Connecticut Anti-Slavery Society. The index locates Hartford's Pennington on 10 pages -- sometimes for when he spoke and sometimes when he was mentioned by name. Online information indicates that the American Anti-Slavery Society sent some female delegates but the convention refused to seat them. Those women were relegated to the balcony, not allowed to be part of the convention. Garrison arriving late at the convention is reported to have joined the women in the balcony refusing to participate in the male only convention. We saw no mention of this issue in the Proceedings. The final sentence in the first paragraph note the presence of women: "A number of ladies were present during the entire sitting of the Convention and evidently took a deep interest in its proceedings." Very Good. Item #90529
