Several ink underlinings in first few chapters. No jacket. This copy once belonged to John Hope Franklin, the celebrated American historian, and the underlinings are probably his. Inscription at top of frontis page ("An Honor to have you stop in Dr. Franklin Michael E. Haynes 75"). Rev. Haynes, the author, served in various capacities at Twelfth Baptist Church for 50 years, including the last 40 as Senior Minister (1964-2004). George Washington Williams, who later wrote the first comprehensive history of African Americans, served as pastor of this church for about two years (1874-1876). Very Good. Item #90546
