Someone, possibly a former owner or someone at the publisher, has added ink notes on pages 5, 7 and 11 to help a reader follow the broken list of "Negro spirituals." This checklist is far from complete and is pretty useless as a bibliographic reference.. The final page acknowldges possible of shortcomings, stating in part: "... some names may have been overlooked and yet, it is the most exhaustive published. We trust the reader will appreciate this limited service and thank you for such omissions you may point out that future lists might be complete." This is followed by a list of books that might provide additional information -- Maud Cuney Hare's "Negro Musicians and Their Music," an actual treasure house of information, is on that list.
