Handbook for Travellers in Japan Including the Whole Empire from Saghalien to Formosa
London: John Murray, 1907. Eighth Edition, revised and partly rewritten. Hardcover. maps (mostly folding, including frontis and pocket), index, ix, [1], 570p. plus 32p. adverts. Original (and still bright) red cloth. 18 cm. The original owner of this volume was from Waterford, Maine and used this for a 1910 trip to Japan, probably with his spouse. Neat pencil comments giving impressions of what they saw are written in margins here and there. All called-for maps and illustrations are present as well as a few additional English-language maps, illustrations and information taken from hotel and other travel brochures acquired on their trip. The largest by far of the added items is a map of Nikko provided by the Anaya Hotel. Our traveler left San Francisco on the "Korea" on March 8th, arrived in Honolulu on the 14th, left Hawaii on the "Mongolia" on the 28th, and arrived in Yokohama on April 8th. The pencil comments are all dated April, suggesting that they were in Japan for around three weeks. The last pencil comment seem to be on page 358 so it may be that they did not visit areas covered after that point in this handbook. The volume contains no information about their return to the United States. These additions and comments seem like a plus to us but not everyone would agree. Compiled by Basil Hall Chamberlain & W. B. Mason. Very Good. Item #92437
