11 Facts on Negro Missions in America

Philadelphia: Women's Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church in America, n.d. 1928 Edition. [so stated]. Small (4)-page leaflet. 15 cm. At head of title" Lutheran Facts Series. Fact 5: "Contrary to th popular notion the negroes are naturally religious and that all of them belong to some church, reliable statistics reveal that over five million negroes in the United States have no connection whatsoever with any church and are as much heathen in their standards of living as the aborigines of Africa. Because of the inadequately prepared ministry, the constant interjection of racial and political questions into their church life, and the unwillingness of educated negroes to take part in congregational activities, a large portion of those enrolled as members in the colored denominations cannot be reckoned as adding much to the Christian forces in America." Fact 8 credits the United Lutheran Church with aiding seven african American congregations with a combined membership of "... a little over 3000 with an equal number of children enrolled in their Sunday Schools." Very Good. Item #92768
