Unsigned typed letter addressed to Emory W. Ross from C. S. Smith regarding a proposed building for Southern Christian Institute ("SCI")in Edwards, Mississippi

Purple type. One page. Dated Feby. 7, 1910.Letterhead stationery for Christian Woman's Board of Missions, Negro Missions with C. C. Smith's name and address in Cincinnati appearing beneath the name of the board. Two vertical and one horizontal crease, probably to fit the letter inside a personal-sized envelope. SCI was a boarding school for African American students affiliated with one or more Protestant denominations -- apparently Disciples of Christ or Church of Christ. Ross, a white man who served as Secretary Treasurer of Southern Christian Institute between 1908 and 1910, had apparently inquired about the possibility of Smith authorizing Ross to raise funds funds to build an Administration building at SCI. Smith smacks him down, refusing his consent, saying that the focus must be on getting "the home for the girl students." Online information reports that a women's dormitory was completed in 1915 by which time Ross was a missionary in Africa. We assume this is either an unsent draft or a retained copy. Item #92770
