Memoirs of Halide Edib. [and] The Turkish Ordeal; Being the Further Memoirs of Halide Edib.

New York and London: The Century Co., (1926 and 1928). 1st American editions. Hardcover. color frontis (in each volume), photos, folding map (in 2nd volume), vii, 472, [8], 407p. Original light green cloth. 23cm. Minor cover soiling and wear (including a scratch on back cover of earlietr volume). No jackets. Adivar is a complicated figure. She is regarded as an early feminist but is also described as an untranationalist because of her apparent support and involvement for harsh treatment and forced religious and cultural assimilation of Armenian children. Her involvement in the the massacre of Armenian seems less clear cut but there is little to admire in her involvement with and treatment of Armenians and Kurds. The second volume ("The Turkish Ordeal") focuses on her involvement with Mustafa Kemal and others as they fought to create a modern Turkish state after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire between the end or World War I and October, 1922. Very Good. Item #92963
