Robert Troup Paine, an undergraduate student at Harvard, committed suicide in 1851. His parents, grieving the death of their only child, published this memoir. Bigelow, to whom this volume is presented, was the Mayor of Boston (1849-1851) but lost his bid for reelection, possibly because of his support for enforcement of the unpopular Fugitive Slave Law during his first term.
