De Philadelphia Riots, or, I Guess it Wan't de Niggas Dis Time: Philadelphia Riots

Philadelphia, PA: Joseph Torr, n.d. [probably issued after the Philadelphia nativist riots in 1844]. Broadside. 23 x 14 cm. Mounted on a closely trimmed, stiff flexibile sheet of paper. Lower left corner torn off with loss one or two words regarding publisher and availability. Minor foxing. Nativist anti-Catholic sentiment was high in Philadelphia and riots broke out in May and July. After the riots, the city of Philadelphia was ordered to pay $45,000 for a church destroyed in the riot and the local Catholic bishop began urging the creation of separate Catholic Schools for Catholic children. The only African American content is the repetitive use of a variation on the "N" word in the chorus and some other racist language elsewhere in the song. OCLC locates two copies of this scarce broadside (Library Co. and Middle Tennessee Univ for Pop). Good. Item #93163
