We have laid in from our stock a cancelled and now folded check payable to St. Luke's Episcopal Church dated Dec. 8, 1897 from Geo. Street and endorsed on the back by "Alex Crummell." We know nothing about Geo. Street, the writer of the laid in check. Crummell. an African American born free in New York City, attended various American educational institutions including an year at Yale Divinity School where he was barred from formal enrollment and denied participation in classes.. Crummell was ordained in the Episcopal Church, serving a church briefly in Providence, Rhode Island before spending three years as a student (classed as a pensioner)) at England's Cambridge University. Crummell then spent almost two decades in Liberia as an Episcopal cleric and an educator. Crummell returned to the United States in 1872 or 1873 and was pastor of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, an independent Episcopal church for African Americans in Washington, D.C., from 1879 to 1894. After retirement, he served as founding President of the American Negro Academy. Cromwell, the former owner, was a founding member of that organization. The laid in cancelled check suggests that Crummell remained connected to St. Lukes after his retirement. Good. Item #94397
