Jacket chipped around edges and end of backstrip and torn along fold of front flat. ISCRIBED on front free endpaper by Lewis Bohler, Jr. ("To Martin Bernheimer... A Peerless Critic (Los Angeles Times), A Greater human being. A Friend & Admirer, Lewis P. Bohler, Jr. Christmas 1979." Inscription printed rather than cursive. Bohler also filled the front pastedown with some printed notes about spirituals. Christmas card laid in with reduced size reprint of a photo of Bohler shaking hands with JImmy Carter that had been Inscribed to Bohler by Carter on the original (not present here). This undated reprint appears to have been issued by Hampton Institute in 1977 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its original publication -- see the Introduction (seven pages) by Nancy B. McGhee, then chairwoman of Hampton'e English Department. Bohler, an African American, was rector of the Church of the Advent in Los Angles. Bernheimer was a Pulitzer Prize winning music critic for the Los Angeles Times (1965-1996). Very Good / Good. Item #94745
