Large library bookplate on each front pastedown for Gloucester Public Library, as well as a much smaller later bookplate of a private owner ("Burke Casari"). Library call number labels appear to have been removed from the backstrip on the first two volumes. Some chipping and mostly short tears with minor loss of cloth at ends of backstrips. Two or three signatures protrude (but are not detached) in first volume. Contents generally sound and clean. Significant foxing on frontis and a few other leaves in last volume; we noticed no other foxing in these volumes. These volumes include two contributions by Richard F. Burton: "Notes on Certain Matters Connected with the Dahoman" at pp. 308-321 in the first volume; and brief "Notes on an Hermaphrodite") at pp. 292-293 in the second volume. Charles Darwin is listed an an Honorary Fellow but contributed no papers and probably would not have been in sympathy with some of the papers in these volumes if ever glanced at any of them. No more volumes were published. Item #94945
