West Indian Gazette: a Periodical of W.I. News and Opinion

Promotional broadsheet (or perhaps the first issue). 31 x 38 cm. Horizontal fold. Odd unsigned typed letter addressed to Miss Clauia V. Jones is laid in. The letter included the unknown writer's typed greeting (with a holograph correction) to the readers of the projected (or nascent) newspaper and a complaint that the writer had previously accepted the post of honorary president and had previously sent a contribution of ten pounds, presumably for the proposed newspaper, and had received no acknowledgement. The newspaper was published from March 1958 to sometime in 1965, apparently lasting only several months after the death of Jones. Claudia Jones (1915-1964),an African American who grew up and lived in New York City, was born in Trinidad and an avowed Communist. She was deported from the United States in 1955. According to Wikipedia, West Indian Gazette (later West Indian Gazette and Afro-Asian Caribbean News)) was "widely considered to have been Britain's first major commercial black newspaper." Very Good. Item #95002
