Commemorative cover honoring 42 Annual Reunion of United Confederate Veterans at Richmond on June 21-24, 1932 which has been signed on front by Clovese ("Joseph Clovese 63rd U. S. Colored Infantry Jan. 30th, 1844")

Personal size airmail envelope. Approx. 17 x 9 cm. Postmarked June 21, 1932. Clovese was the last living Union Army veteran when he died. We don't know why or when (1932?) Clovese signed this cover honoring Confederate veterans. He had been enslaved when he was born. He ran away to join the Union Army around 1861. He is credited with service as a Private in two Union Army units (Ninth Infantry, Corps d’Afrique, and the 63rd US Colored Infantry (regiment). Clovese claimed to have been a drummer boy during the siege of Vicksburg. He lived most of his life in Slidell, Louisiana, but died in Pontiac, Michigan where he had moved along with a niece who was providing care for him. Very Good. Item #95375

Price: $300.00
